JAMU FOR DYSMENORRHEA

Jamu Recipes for Dysmenorrhea (Menstrual Pain)


PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY: Dysmenorrhea is a painful menstruation or menstrual cramps which should not be confused with other menstrual discomfort like headache, nausea, and a sensation of pressure in the lower abdomen. There are two types: primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea, which is common among young women, has some association with an endocrine imbalance, and its symptoms usually diminish or disappear during motherhood. Secondary or acquired dysmenorrhea, is likely to happen somewhat later in life and may be the result of pelvic inflammation, mal-position of the uterus, or the presence of fibroid tumor in the uterus

INDICATIONS: Pain or cramps before and or during periods

Recipe # 1 Dysmenorhhea due to tumor or myoma

INGREDIENTS:
Ginger (Zingiber officinale, jahe) – 2 finger-size cuts
Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus, sereh) – 2 stalks
Palm sugar (gulau enau) – 3 thumb-size cuts

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Peel and clan wash the ginger. Put the ginger, lemon grass and palm sugar in 4 glasses of pure water. Boil until left to 2 glasses only. Strain off after cooling. Drink ½ glass 2 times a day

Recipe # 2 - Dysmenorhhea due to infection

INGREDIENTS:
Mollugo pentaphylla grass (daun rumput mutiara) – 2 handfuls

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash the leaves and boil in 3 glasses of pure water until left to 1 glass. Strain after cooling. Drink this ½ glass, two times a day, in the morning and afternoon

Recipe # 3 - Dysmenorhhea due to infection

INGREDIENTS:
Cyperus rotundus – grass stalks (rimpang rumput teki) – 4 stalks

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash the rhizomes and boil in 3 glasses of pure water until left to 1 glass. Strain after cooling and add a little honey. Drink this ½ glass, two times a day

REMARKS: Mollugo pentaphylla grass (rumput mutiara) has the effect to treat myoma, fungal and bacterial infection in the vagina. Excessive intake of this herb may cause thirsty and dry mouth, while Cyperus rotundus grass (rumput teki) possesses the effect as hemostatic and to cure leukorrhea.
