Jamu Recipes for Prostatic Hypertrophy
PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY:
The prostate gland is an accessory organ of the male reproductive system. It
surrounds the urethra at the base of the bladder and the alkaline fluid that it
constantly secretes is meant to nourish and lubricate the sperm cells. The
common disorder of this gland is prostate hypertrophy or enlargement of the
prostate gland. About 50% of the male population over the age of 50 suffers
from prostate hypertrophy regardless of sexual circumstances. The specific
cause is unknown, probably hormonal changes due to the aging process is to be
responsible for this condition. The condition is not inflammatory, nor is it
related to cancer of the prostate for which the cause is also unknown.
INDICATIONS:
symptoms of prostate hypertrophy: difficulties in beginning to urinate; a
feeling that the bladder is never emptied; more frequent urge to urinate,
burning sensation in the urethra when passing the urine
Recipe # 1
INGREDIENTS:
Palm
tree roots (akar pohon enau) – 5 finger-size cuts
Coarse
grass roots (Imperata cylindrica-radix,
akar alang-alang) – 10 inches
Cat’s
whisker (Orthosiphon spicatus-folia,
daun kumis kucing) – ½ handful
Fennel
seeds (Foeniculum vulgare, adas) – ½
tablespoon
Pulosari
tree (Alyxia stellata, pulosari) – ½
finger-size cut
PREPARATION
AND DOSAGE:
Decoction:
Clean wash the roots and cut to small pieces. Boil with the other ingredients
in 5 glasses of pure water. Let it boil until left to 3 glasses. Strain after
cooling. Dosage: ½ glass 3 times a day for a week.
Recipe # 2
INGREDIENTS:
Papaya
flowers (Carica papaya-flora, bunga
papaya gantung) – ½ tablespoon
Dried papaya roots (Carica papaya-radix, akar papaya gantung kering) – 1½ finger-size
cut
Dried papaya skin (Carica papaya-fructus, kulit papaya gantung kering) – 1 finger-size
cut
Child
pick-a-pack tree (Phyllanthus niruri,
pohon meniran) – 4 stalks
PREPARATION
AND DOSAGE:
Decoction:
Clean wash the papaya roots and skin, and cut to small pieces. Boil with the
other ingredients in 5 glasses of pure water. Let it boil until left to 3
glasses. Strain after cooling. Dosage: ½ glass 3 times a day for a week.
