JAMU FOR DYSENTERY

Jamu Recipes for Dysentery


PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY: Dysentery is a contagious large intestine infection by certain bacteria or micro-organism, usually worms, that causes excessive watery bowel movement and sometimes marked with blood.

INDICATIONS:
 Symptoms of dysentery: colic; diarrhea, very frequent up to 20 times a day; green stool color and may be marked with blood; fever; could be accompanied by abdominal muscle tension; weakness due to dehydration; thirsty

Recipe # 1
 

INGREDIENTS:
Devil’s tree leaves (Alstonia scholaris, daun pulai) – 5 leaves
White gambier (Uncaria gambieri, gambir) – 1 finger-size cut
Honey (madu) – 2 tablespoons

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:

Decoction: Clean wash and fine grind the two materials. Add a glass of boiling water and the honey, and stir well. Then squeeze the mixture and strain. Dosage: drink the decoction, 3 tablespoonfuls 2 times a day.

Recipe # 2
 

INGREDIENTS:
Sugar apple bark (Annona squamosa, kulit batang srikaya) – 3 finger-size cuts
Syrup (air gula) – adequate amount

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:

Clean wash the sugar apple bark. Cut to small pieces and put it in 4 glasses of pure water, bring to boil until left to 2 glasses. Strain after cooling. Add adequate amount of syrup (liquid sugar) to enhance taste. Drink ½ glass 2 times a day.

REMARKS:
 Patients with symptoms of dehydration should drink a lot of fluids especially a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink (sport drink) or should hospitalized to replace the loss of body fluids and electrolytes by intravenous dripping if dehydration becomes severe.
