Jamu Recipes for Diarrhea

PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY: Diarrhea is a pathologic condition that consists of a set of symptoms caused by various disorders along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The cause may vary from infection, overeating, irritation of the GI-tract, malabsorption, food poisoning, drug side-effects, diabetes, emotion disturbances, tumor or cancer in the GI-tract.

INDICATIONS:
 Symptoms of diarrhea: frequent or watery bowel movement or loose stools; possible abdominal cramping; presence of mucous; sometimes with blood, either bright red (fresh blood) or black (oxidized blood); foul smelling stool. Other symptoms: nausea; fever; weakness; insomnia, excessive sweating.

Recipe # 1
 

INGREDIENTS:

Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma domestica, umbi kunyit) – 1 finger-size cut
Betel leaves lime (kapur sirih) – adequate amount

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:

Decoction: Clean wash and fine grind the turmeric rhizome. Squeeze the juicy substance and strain to get the sap. Add a little amount of betel leaves lime and mix evenly. Drink the decoction 1 tablespoon once a day.

Recipe # 2 


INGREDIENTS:

Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma domestica, umbi kunyit) – 1 finger-size cut
Guava leaves (Psidium guajava, daun jambu biji) – 5 young fresh leaves

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:

Decoction: Clean wash the two ingredients. Scrape the turmeric. Squeeze well the young guava leaves together with the scraped turmeric to tap the fluid and then strain.
Drink the whole amount of decoction. Repeat this 3 times a day.

Recipe # 3
 
INGREDIENT:

Bixa orellana – leaves (daun kesumba keling) – ½ handful

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:

Decoction: Clean wash the leaves and put into 2 glasses of pure water. Boil until left to ¾ portion of the initial volume. Strain after cooling. Drink it ½ glass 2 times a day.
