Jamu Recipes for Cystitis


PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY: Cystitis is the infection of the urine bladder, which may be acute or chronic. The most common cause in women is the Escherichia coli, a rod shaped bacterium that normally lives in the intestines and is wiped into the urethra after a bowel movement. Another common cause is the gonococcus, the germ responsible for gonorrhea. Another source of bladder infection is a downward infection from the kidneys.

INDICATIONS: Symptoms of cystitis: Urgency and frequent urination which may be painful, passage of blood or pus with the urine. Urine examination shows albumin, pus, blood, and cells

Recipe # 1 

INGREDIENTS:
Cat’s whisker (Orthosiphon aristatus, daun remujung) – 2 handfuls
Kayu anyang (Elaeocarpi fructus, stem) – 100 grams
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare, adas) – 100 grams

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Boil all the ingredients in 3 glasses of water until left to 1½ glasses. Strain after cooling. Drink this 1 glass 3 times a day.

Recipe # 2

INGREDIENTS:
Notophanax fruticosum - bark (kayu kedondong) – 4 finger-size cuts
Syrup (air gula) – 2 table spoons.

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash and cut the wood to small peaces. Boil in 5 glasses of pure water until left to 2½ glasses. Strain off after cooling.

REMARKS: Cystitis should be treated effectively before it becomes chronic and disabling. Antibiotic choice should be made based on the identification of microorganism.

Jamu Recipes for Endometritis

PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY: 
Endometritis is the inflammation of the endometrium which is the inner lining of the uterus. This condition may be the result of a normal delivery, infection following an episiotomy or abortion, or of gonorrhea. Endometritis should be given prompt medical attention.

INDICATIONS: Symptoms of endometritis: fever, localized pain, and a mal odorous discharge.


Recipe # 1 

INGREDIENTS:
Mousetail leaves (Haliotropicum indicum - folia, daun buntut tikus) – 10 leaves
Prickly-leaved elephant’s foot (Elephantopus scaber, daun tapak liman) – 9 leaves
Daun sumbang colok – 14 leaves
Green chiretta leaves (Andrographis paniculata, daun sambiloto) – 50 leaves
Stretch shrub (Parameria laevigata, kayu rapat) – ½ finger-size cut
Palm sugar (gula enau) – 3 finger-size cuts

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash all materials and boil in 3 glasses of pure water and let it boil until left to 1 glass. Strain after cooling. Drink this ½ glass 3 times a day

Recipe # 2 

INGREDIENTS:
Platycerium bifurcatum – leaves ( daun simbar menjangan) – 3 leaves
Salt (garam) – 1 teaspoonful
Clean water – 2 liters

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Vaginal wash: Clean wash and fine grind the leaves. Add the salt and 4 tablespoon of warm water. Squeeze the mixture until even. Add more water and stir even. Strain off and use the liquid as vaginal wash, 2 times a day.

REMARKS: Causal therapy should accompany this herbal symptomatic treatment. Acute endometritis should be cured with antibiotics. Some severe cases need curettage and hysterectomy as determined by the obstetrician. Senile endometritis may occur in women after the menopause, and usually curettage is advisable, especially as a check for malignancy.

PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY: Dysmenorrhea is a painful menstruation or menstrual cramps which should not be confused with other menstrual discomfort like headache, nausea, and a sensation of pressure in the lower abdomen. There are two types: primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea, which is common among young women, has some association with an endocrine imbalance, and its symptoms usually diminish or disappear during motherhood. Secondary or acquired dysmenorrhea, is likely to happen somewhat later in life and may be the result of pelvic inflammation, mal-position of the uterus, or the presence of fibroid tumor in the uterus

INDICATIONS: Pain or cramps before and or during periods

Recipe # 1 Dysmenorhhea due to tumor or myoma

INGREDIENTS:
Ginger (Zingiber officinale, jahe) – 2 finger-size cuts
Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus, sereh) – 2 stalks
Palm sugar (gulau enau) – 3 thumb-size cuts

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Peel and clan wash the ginger. Put the ginger, lemon grass and palm sugar in 4 glasses of pure water. Boil until left to 2 glasses only. Strain off after cooling. Drink ½ glass 2 times a day

Recipe # 2 - Dysmenorhhea due to infection

INGREDIENTS:
Mollugo pentaphylla grass (daun rumput mutiara) – 2 handfuls

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash the leaves and boil in 3 glasses of pure water until left to 1 glass. Strain after cooling. Drink this ½ glass, two times a day, in the morning and afternoon

Recipe # 3 - Dysmenorhhea due to infection

INGREDIENTS:
Cyperus rotundus – grass stalks (rimpang rumput teki) – 4 stalks

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash the rhizomes and boil in 3 glasses of pure water until left to 1 glass. Strain after cooling and add a little honey. Drink this ½ glass, two times a day

REMARKS: Mollugo pentaphylla grass (rumput mutiara) has the effect to treat myoma, fungal and bacterial infection in the vagina. Excessive intake of this herb may cause thirsty and dry mouth, while Cyperus rotundus grass (rumput teki) possesses the effect as hemostatic and to cure leukorrhea.

Jamu Recipes for Leukorrhea 

PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY:  
Leukorrhea is an abnormal, white discharge from the vagina. This flow indicates a congestion or infection either in the vagina, cervix, uterus or the Fallopian tube. Common causes are un-cleanliness, gonorhhoe, fungal or protozoan infections. Since the discharge may be caused by various conditions, it requires examination by a physician and a test of the discharge to identify the micro-organism responsible for this condition

INDICATIONS: A white discharge from the vagina

Recipe # 1 

INGREDIENTS:
Green chiretta (Andrographis paniculata, sambiloto) – 3 whole plants

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash the green chiretta plants and chop to small cuts. Put it in 4 glasses of pure water and let it boil until left to 2 glasses. Strain off after cooling. Add some honey for sweetener. Recommended dose: ¾ glass 3 times a day.

Recipe # 2

INGREDIENTS:
Mayana leaves (Coleus scutellarioides, daun iler/miana) – 10 leaves
Honey (madu) – sufficient amount

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Clean wash the mayana leaves, and boil in 3 glasses of pure water. Let it boil until left to 1½ glass. Strain off after cooling. Add the honey to enhance taste.

Recipe # 3

INGREDIENTS:
Betel leaves (Piper betle, daun sirih) - 10 leaves
Round turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza, temulawak) – 1 finger-size cut
Turmeric (Curcuma domestica, kunyit) – 1 finger-size cut

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Vaginal wash: Clean wash all ingredients and cut to small pieces. Boil in 1 liter of pure water for about 15 minutes. Use the liquid for vaginal washing while it is lukewarm. Do this regularly 2 times a day.

Recipe # 4 

INGREDIENTS:
Turmeric (Curcuma domestica, kunyit) – 1 finger-size cut
Tamarind (Tamarindus indica, asam Jawa) – 1 finger size cut
Palm sugar (gula enau) – adequate amount

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Peel and scrape the turmeric. Steep the tamarind in boiled water, and stir well until the tamarind dilutes. Add the palm sugar and the scraped turmeric to this tamarind extract. Strain off the mixture. Recommended dose: ¼ glass 2 times a day.

Recipe # 5 

INGREDIENTS:
Physic nut leaves (Jatropha Curcas – folia, daun jarak pagar) – 7 leaves

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Vaginal wash: Clean wash and fine grind the physic nut leaves. Steep in boiled water, and strain after cooling. Use the strained liquid as vaginal wash.

Basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum, daun kemangi)

Clean wash all the leaves and serve them as “lalap” or raw vegetables as an addition to other dishes. Eat this “lalap every day.

The famous herbal recipe widely used by Indonesian women to improve their complexion is a mixture called Mangir. Here is the formula.

Recipe #1 

INGREDIENTS:
Shepard turmeric (Curcuma heyneana, temu giring) – 3 finger-size cut
Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma domestica, rimpang kunyit) – 3 finger-size cut
Litsea cubeba powder (bubuk krangeyan) – 2 tablespoons
Atal – 1 piece
Rice (Oriza sativa, beras) – 1 tablespoonful

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Peel and clean wash the turmeric rhizomes. Fine grind the rhizomes together with the Litsea powder and rice until you get a fine powder. Add the atal and compress the mixture to make a compact powder. When using it, mix the mangir with a little water and rub it onto the facial skin. Let it dry and stay for about 30 minutes. Wash off the mangir with lukewarm water. For maximum result repeat this, twice in a week.

Fry the seeds without oil (dry frying) until it becomes dry. Fine grind the dried papaya seeds until you get a black powder. Add a little water when applying the black powder to your hair, while massaging the scalp. Let it stay until it gets dry. Wash off and shampoo your hair. Do this daily until your hair blackens.

Recipe # 2 – Eyebrows blackening 

INGREDIENT:
Candlenuts (Aleuritis moluccana, biji kemiri) – 3 pieces

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Fry the candlenuts without oil (dry frying) until dry. Fine grind the candlenut until you get a black powder. Add a little water to make a black paste. Apply the black paste on to the eyebrows and let it stay until it gets dry. Do this daily until your eyebrows get black.

REMARKS: Papaya seed contains glucoside cacirine, a substance that possess the effect of blacken keratin, a hard form of protein that structures our hair and also found in our fingernails and toenails

Mix the ground rhizomes with the other ingredients and boil in 2 glasses of pure water. Let it boil until left to 1 glass. To enhance taste you can add an adequate amount of sour lime juice, honey and palm sugar. Drink this decoction: ¼ glass once a day, in the afternoon.

INGREDIENTS:
Pomegranate fruit skin (Punica granatum, kulit delima putih) - ½ of the fruit skin
Mecca galls (Quercus lusitanica, majakan) – 1 piece
Dried clove flowers (Syzygum aromatica, bunga cengkeh kering) – 10 pieces
Cubeb pepper (Piper cubeba, kemukus) – 10 pieces
Long pepper (Piper retrofractum, cabai Jawa) – 1 piece
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare, adas) – 1 teaspoon
Cinnamon bars (Cinnamomum burmanni, kayumanis) – 2 bars
Turmeric (Curcuma domestica, kunyit) – 2 finger-size cut
Zedoary rhizome (Kaempferia galangal, kencur) – 2 finger-size cut
Round turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza, temulawak) – 1 finger-size cut

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Grind the turmeric, zedoary and round turmeric, but not too fine. Mix the ground ingredients with the others and boil in 2 glasses of water. Let boil until left to 1 glass. Strain after cooling. To enhance taste you can add an adequate amount of sour lime juice, honey and palm sugar. Drink this decoction: ¼ glass once a day, in the afternoon.

PATHO-PHYSIOLOGY: Tumor or neoplasm is a new growth of tissue in a limited area, with abnormal structure or location. Tumors are classified in two major groups: malignant tumors and benign tumors. Recipe # 1 - for brain tumors 

INGREDIENTS:
Vigna sinensis - beans (kacang tolo merah) – 3 tablespoons
Chicken claws (cakar ayam kampung) – 6 pieces
Garlic (Allium sativum, bawang putih) – 3 pieces
Parsley leaves (Apium graveolens-folia, daun seledri) – 3 stalks
Salt (garam) – adequate amount

Decoction: Clean wash the chicken claws and cut each into 3 parts. Boil the claw cuts together with the other ingredients in 8 glasses of pure water. Let it boil until left to 4 glasses. Strain after cooling. Dosage: ½ glass 3 times a day.

Recipe # 2 - for tumors in the uterus 

INGREDIENTS:
Tea epiphytes (Scurrula atropurpurea-folia, daun benalu teh) – 1 handful
Green chiretta leaves (Andrographis paniculata-folia, daun sambiloto) – 11 leaves
Arabic gum – 1 piece (the size of a marble)
Zedoary (Curcuma zedoaria, rimpang temu putih) – 1 finger-size cut

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Peel and clean wash the zedoary, and cut to small pieces. Boil the zedoary and the other ingredients in 5 glasses of pure water. Let boil until left to 3 glasses. Cool down and strain. Dosage: ½ glass 3 times a day.

Remarks: During this herbal treatment it is advisable to avoid consuming fish, thorny fruit (durian), jackfruit, fatty and spicy food.

Recipe # 3 - for breast tumors

INGREDIENTS:
Sour lime epiphyte (Scurrula atropurpurea-folia, benalu jeruk nipis) – 1 handful
Green chiretta leaves (Andrographis paniculata, daun sambiloto) - ½ handful
Caesalpinia crysta – bark (kayu secang) - ¼ handful
Fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare, adas) – ½ tablespoon
Arabic gum – 1 piece (the size of a marble)
Turmeric (Curcuma domestica, kunyit) – 1 egg-size rhizome

PREPARATION AND DOSAGE:
Decoction: Peel and clean wash the turmeric, and cut to small pieces. Boil the turmeric and the other ingredients in 8 glasses of pure water. Let boil until left to 4 glasses. Cool down and strain. Dosage: 1/3 glass 3 times a day.
