JAMU’S SCARCE INGREDIENTS

In spite of the increasing demand of jamu, supplies of several ingredients become scarce. The replanting of the required ingredients was not well planned and managed to anticipate future demands. Only the big jamu producers can afford to have their own plantation of those scarce ingredients to support continuous production of their commercial jamu recipes.

Here’s the list of those ingredients :


Pulosari (Alyxia stellata, pulosari tree) - It is present to mask the taste and smell of other raw materials. Well known as a remedy for coughs, fever, urinary problems and gonorrhea


Sintok (Cinnamomum sintoc) – It is prescribed for many illness including diarrhea, insect bites and syphilis.


Temu mangga (Cyrcuma mangga) – A favorite culinary seasoning and is also a remedy for stomach problems and fever. At now a day this herb is becoming scarce.


Masoyi (Cryptocarya massoy, Massoi bark) – It is a popular perfume for incense and widely used for cramps in pregnancy.


Jenitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus, Java laurel tree) – Its gall is used to treat white vaginal discharge and pus in the womb. The tree is becoming scarce


Jati Belanda (Guazuma ulmifolia, the bastard cedar) – One of the stalwart of the slimming jamu


Kayu rapet (Parameria laevigata) – The bark is used in recipes to keep a woman’s body and complexion in beautiful condition. Its prime function is to dry the vagina.


Burahol (Stelechocarpus burahol) – Its fruit removes smell from the urine


Purwoceng (Pimpinella alpine) – Used as aphrodisiac and impotence cure


Kikoneng (Arcangelisia flava) - Its stem contains a chemical component useful for treating jaundice, mouth ulcers and smallpox, while the seeds are an antidote for poisoning.


Kayu cendana (Santalum album, sandalwood) – Very well known as perfume and also soften skin. It is used in face powders and can effectively treat rheumatics or winds


Gandapura (Abelmoschus moschatus, musk mellow, fragrance of the palace) – Known as perfume and also soften skin. It is used in face powders and can effectively treat rheumatics or winds


Kayu angin (Usnea thallus) – The lichen is an astringent and anti-spamodic that helps intestinal problems and bowel complaints.


Kayu ular (Strychnos lucida) – Used for tonics, constipation and bowel remedies
